Welcome!

After undergoing the times of uncertainty, the students of Mediterranean lacertids will be finally able to meet again in person to share experiences as have been doing since 1991. The Lacertid Symposium is a conference where specialists coming from multiple scientific fields, that are frequently separated, can interact directly around common study organisms, the lizards of the Family Lacertidae but where also studies on representatives of other families in the Mediterranean are welcome. It is where students present their first works and can meet leading specialists, where theoretical or methodological novelties are introduced to a general audience and, certainly, where new ideas start. While conservation was always in the core of the meeting, nowadays the global biodiversity crisis, especially affecting the Mediterranean Region and the lacertids, demands from specialists detecting threats, developing diagnostic tools and promoting scientifically-based solutions, all them to be presented here.

Every time Lacertid students have met, usually every three years, research interchange was privileged over formality. Certainly, the venue, usually an insular or coastal Mediterranean locality of moderate size, contributed to such a friendly environment, which is the seed of many fruitful collaborations, productive projects, promising theses, and excellent publications. This time the reunion moves to Macaronesia, in the western edge of the Mediterranean Region, namely to the archipelago of Madeira, inhabited by the endemism Teira dugesii. We are happy to announce that the 12th International Symposium on the Mediterranean Lacertid Lizards will be held on Funchal, Madeira Island (Portugal) on 27-31 June 2024.
